HoNOS assessment in practice
The following films feature a real clinician and an actor.
These films are based on the work of the clinician, who uses the approach shown. This clinician finds this approach helpful for building understanding and collaboration with service users over time. Te Pou thought the approach taken by the clinician deserved a wider audience and hence these films.
We acknowledge that HoNOS is not a replacement for a comprehensive clinical assessment, since a comprehensive assessment would focus on the full range of service user experiences, symptoms and strengths. The focus on the HoNOS ratings in the way depicted is for film purposes, and is only to demonstrate one way of building outcome measurement into routine clinical practice. In addition there is no suggestion that clinicians should focus on HoNOS as a checklist during a clinical assessment. These films depict one technique, within the context of a wider clinical assessment, for developing a more collaborative partnership over outcome measurement.
Our hope is that these films will be useful as a way of raising the issue of how to incorporate HoNOS into routine clinical assessment by provoking discussion and debate.
These films are designed to highlight one important element of outcome measurement; namely that of making outcome measurement as collaborative as possible, which many service users are asking for. Due to this narrow focus these films are not for MHSMART basic training purposes but only for information utility training.
