Research gaps analysis

Research can make a difference to the one in five New Zealanders who experience mental illness and addiction and their families/whanau. Research has an important role in informing policy and planning, as well as building and maintaining quality, effective and innovative services.

In 2004 the Mental Health Research and Development Strategy Group outlined the direction for future research aimed at improving outcomes for service users/tangata whaiora.

The objective of the research gaps analysis was to systematically review mental health research undertaken in New Zealand since 2004.  A preliminary report was completed in July 2009. It provides an overview of completed mental health research.  As part of the project, literature specifically focusing on Maori, Pacific, Asian, refugee and migrants was identified.

A bibliography list of New Zealand and population specific research is now available.

The report examined the extent to which research addressed priority areas.  Areas that could be strengthened in future research were also identified.

To identify current research activities we will be contacting researchers in September 2009 in conjunction with the database of New Zealand mental health research.  The database provides a central place for researchers to promote and disseminate their work. Research can be submitted to the database online or by contacting us.
