"I came away feeling I had been listened to" - Forum visitor

Te Pou staff shared the most glorious day in Napier on Wednesday, with stunning weather and a venue right by the sea. We opened the back door and had a view all day of shimmering teal ocean with a soft caressing breeze - blissful escape from the office!

Our visitors matched the day - wonderful people, passionate about mental health and eager to share with us their thoughts. Here are some of them:

• They liked the forums and wanted them to occur again. Some had not heard of Te Pou and this gave them an opportunity to explore what we do now and what we might do in the future. They welcomed the national approach and national leadership being taken by Te Pou.

• A number are saying we need one central place where all research being undertaken now in New Zealand is documented.

• There is a need to know what each research fund funds. There is general confusion around this. They would like research funders to be explicit about their areas of interest.

• Some would like us to look at CDOI Client-directed outcome measures (social measures).

• People love the innovation fund and the opportunity this provides.

• There is concern about the HPCA Act.

• People want national coordination of training for Duly Authorised Officers (DAOs) and crisis workers, and the development of national competencies.

• There is the desire for an online forum for DAOs and crisis workers to be able to talk with each other.

KPP is supported in the region, but there is not enough information filtering down.

• There is no nationally consistent focus and training for employment specialists in mental health. People would like to see employment featured on the web more.

• There was concern expressed about past competitive models and the legacy this has left, which hampers collaboration.

• The e-nursing publication was seen as very positive and welcomed.

• The region wants practical support from Te Pou to facilitate local nursing forums.

• The emerging focus on family needs was welcomed as they expressed concern at the current one-size-fits-all approach.

Excellent. Let's watch this space as you develop. Very interested in working with you, especially on research projects and linking in to KPP development" - Forum visitor
